Helping your child discover her world prepares her for reading.

Jefferson County Public Library is hosting fun, free events at all ten of its locations, plus the bookmobile, throughout September to help boost early reading skills in families with children.

Before a child is ready to read, they first need to read, talk, write, sing, and play. These practices help them hear the sounds that make words, recognize letters and print, gain vocabulary, and tell stories. The Library’s Raise a Reader events will give parents and caregivers helpful activities and tools they can use at home to help children, from birth up, learn valuable reading skills.

“It’s never too early to bring your baby to the library,” says Barb Yeutter Roig, Kids and Families Manager for Jefferson County Public Library. “Getting ready to read starts from day one. Parents and caregivers are teaching their babies to read every time they talk, coo, sing, or play with their children.”

The events are free and offer prizes, snacks, and fun for the whole family. Some locations are also offering the events in Spanish *.
